Are your kids glued to the TV for hours on end either watching programs or playing video games? Recent research has found that on average our kids are watching more than 5 hours a day of TV, that’s a shocking amount of time!
Even more shocking is that when parents were asked why they allow their child to watch so much TV, they replied that they didn’t know how else to entertain them and keep them busy.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against video games or children’s TV programs at all, in fact I do believe that they can be educational and teach kids valuable skills such as hand to eye coordination and problem solving skills for video games and good values from programs, however, I also believe in everything in moderation and 5 hours of TV for a child is far too much.
As parents we need to get the kids outside and playing fun outdoor kids games, games like:
Capture the Flag where two teams each hide a flag and the other team has to capture it and return it to their base.
Duck Duck Goose where the kids sit in a circle and one child will walk round the circle tapping the heads on the other kids naming then duck or goose. When a child is named goose they have to chase the child round the circle and try to catch them before they get back to their space in the circle.
Tag where someone is ‘it’ and have to chase the other players to make them it by touching them. A variation on tag is Freeze Tag where once touched the child has to freeze with their legs apart. The only way to become active again is by another player crawling through your legs. The child who is ‘it’ has to freeze all the players to win.
Skipping which can be played solo or with a group of friends. There are many rhymes that go with skipping.
Hopscotch where the child throws a stone onto the first square and then has to jump over that square whilst hopping then on the way back pick up the stone and repeat with square 2.
Dodgeball is a game mostly for the boys. Two teams each have a ball and throw it at a player on the opposite team. If a player is hit then they are out. The team that eliminates all the other teams players wind.
These are just a few examples of the thousands of fun outdoor games for kids. There are so many that you could have a different game to play for every day of the year keeping your kids happy all year round.
