There are a lot of benefits to raising chickens at home, but before you can do anything of the sort you are going to need to either purchase a chicken coop or construct one yourself. You can of course just go out and pay money for one, but there are a lot of reasons not to do so. Contructing a chicken coop is not quite as straightforward as it sounds. One thing that you need to examine is how low you make the ceiling. I understand chickens can’t fly but they can hop, and when they do jump they tend to hit things. If your ceiling is too short, then your chickens are likely to actually crack their necks and drop to their deaths. It sounds repulsive and hideous but it does actually transpire, so this is something that you need to watch out for.

When you build your own chicken coop you have more control over how it works. I know you probably think it’s just a chicken coop and how difficult can it be, but these things can in fact become very complicated. For instance, if you want an simple way to retrieve the eggs then you can mount a sort of hatch on the exterior of the coop so that you can open it open in the morning and get the eggs from the nests without ever stepping foot in the interior.

Keep in mind that you do need to install a few necessary things inside the chicken coop, one of these being a heat lamp. Chickens need a specified amount of time each day in the light, and they also need some in the night, so it’s important to make sure that you get a decent heat lamp and also make sure that it is out of their reach. Remember that chickens like to jump and if you have your heat lamp too low it is a real method for tragedy.

Something that you’ll want to keep in mind is that sometimes it is required to have a separate area for wounded or younger chickens. If you try to have younger chickens in with the adult chickens then there will be a clash. The same goes for ill chickens. Chicken coops that you acquire probably won’t be equipped with such a thing. When you build your own coop you can include anything you want, and it will be a good idea to include a sort of quarantine spot.

Keep in mind that you also need to build an outside area, and if you have built your own coop it will be a lot easier. You’ll need to get some chicken wire, and if you really feel like going all out you can enclose the top of the enclosure as well to make sure animals don’t get in and have themselves some chicken pot pie.

The actual benefits of raising chickens are unlimited. They can serve as food later on, or if you have opted for laying hens you’ll never need to buy eggs again. They can also act as family pets and your kids will have hours of fun interacting with them.
