Many companies when advertising a new phone are telling us that it is 3G, have you ever wondered what this actually means? Well basically there have been different generations of cellular technology, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. If they say it is “3G” then they mean it is 3rd generation.

But what is new about 3G? 1G is the first generation of mobile Wifi Technology. It was analog based communication which has since been replaced by digital signals in 2G. With the change to digital in 2G we are able to compress, encrypt and correct errors in the data. 2nd Generation can also allow internet access with speeds up to 14.4kbps. The most popular 2G technologies are: GSM which is very popular throughout the world, especially Europe and is used by Rogers. There is also CDMA which is used my Telus and Bell.

Now 3G Technology brings even faster speeds, from about 144Kbps to 2.4Mbps. Mainly useful on smart phones this technology can let you use many bandwidth intensive internet applications like downloading, streaming video and much more. Providers that currently have 3G available are Rogers, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T

Some are already looking toward the fourth generation which would be speeds up to 100 megabits per second on mobile devices. 4G would use an entirely IP based system.

Some of the more popular 3G phones are: The Iphone 3G. It can be purchased from Rogers for $99 with a 3 year contract. It boasts a range of features and apps like: touchscreen, built in camera, mp3 and video player, safari web browser, youtube and thousands of applications that can be downloaded for free or a price at the appstore. There is also the Blackberry Storm 9530 which you can get on a 3G contract from Bell for $149.95. Some other 3G phones are: Palm Treo Pro, BlackBerry Tour, Samsung Vice, Samsung Omnia and many others.

In terms of plans there are lots of different 3G plans out there with hugely varying fees depending on the provider, country, transfer limit and many other factors. Generally though you can expect a steep raise in your costs if you move to a 3G plan.

It is up to you whether you think the extra prince of 3G plans and phones are worth the extra speed they provide. If you do use a lot of internet on your smartphone then you might want to consider moving to a 3G network. To anyone on the road a lot having fast internet at your fingertips at all times may be well worth the price.
