NO… it can’t be! A scream from the Internet Security Software producing companies around the world! They’d go bust… no viruses, no anti virus software… no money! No… No… No!

While half of the news items will be on the fresh attacks on systems, online services etc. the other half of the news items will showcase one or the other antivirus company, either releasing a new version of their software or acquiring someone else’s business!

These companies are thriving, and how! It really makes me cringe at the thought of a possible nexus between the virus writers and their nemesis, the antivirus software companies! Very much possible but noone has come up with any real evidence till date.

I have been extremely vocal about the deteriorating condition of internet security at various seminars at my university. And, the low awareness level of the threats amongst the Indian population only makes the situation worse for internet users in our country.

Kaushal Vaidya, our computer science professor, agrees with me on this and has presented several papers on the issue to various forums around the world.

The only people benefiting from the menace, apart from those who pose these threats, seem to be the companies that make software to counter these threats, aka, internet security software, anti spyware, anti virus, anti rootkit and what not!

Many a time, it makes all us guys wonder, if there’s a conspiracy theory somewhere under the hood! Very plausible, says Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya, but not provable!

Authors of malicious code and the companies that write antivirus software, they have something cooking. Otherwise, how’d one explain the fact that antivirus software wouldn’t exist if there were no worms and viruses!

Companies that make antivirus software make loads of money. Still, no one has managed to find a trail of money from antivirus companies to the people who are writing worms and viruses. This makes one wonder, at times, if the conspiracy theory really exists!

Out of the scores of companies in this arena, there are bound to be some rogue companies benefiting out of the plight of the hapless internet users. At the same time, most of the biggies in the business are doing a lot to keep the trouble at bay.

Still, the doubt remains. Meanwhile, the malicious attacks will continue to rock the world and the software companies will keep releasing newer and upgraded versions of their software and the users will keep spending their hard earned money on them believing that their computers, data and privacy will be safe! Ah, someone said it quite aptly – ignorance is bliss!

And till the next attack, the lived happily ever after!
