Calisthenics or exercises can on occasion offer many benefits which most sports cannot. Calisthenics can be selected for varying purposes:
1. As setting-up exercises in starting out the day.
2. As flexibility exercises which are a prelude to safe and strenuous physical activity.
3. As interim exercises which bridge the gap between neophyte flexibility programs and later blood-and-guts workouts.
4. As exercises for rounding out areas less used in your main sport.
5. As a well-rounded program of exercises which can be used routinely as your main activity or which can substitute for a period when you are unable to enjoy your main sport, such as when you are traveling, when you are weather-bound, or when strictures of time require an abbreviated yet complete workout before dashing off to the office.
6. As exercises to aid recovery from injury and disability.
7. As a means of reducing undesired bulges and of thus accentuating more socially noticeable silhouettes. Beware of promotional chicanery. You cannot possibly remodel completely a chassis which constitutionally has inherited ronounced characteristics. No one would dare hope that facial exercises can alter the contour of the family nose. Nor can chomping on the jaw improve irregular teeth which are part of your inheritance. Yet people still cling to the belief that heavy thighs, small chests, wide (not fat) behinds, and stubby fingers can be transformed through diligent exercise. This is not true.
Everyone inherits a basic structure. This structure can be modified, altered, and improved, but not redone. The human anatomy is remarkably consistent so much so that anatomical family traits are inconsequential although perhaps noticeable.
However, gross abnormalities of your chassis are more your own fault than those of your genes. Physical and unenjoyable defects which you did not inherit and which can be remedied are:
1. Weak, thin arms
2. Puny chest
3. Rotund abdomen
4. Fat and wobbly behind—”big pelvis”
5. Sagging posture
6. Ungainly gait
7. Awkwardness generally
8. Obesity
Sports and exercise can remove fat and increase muscle tone—safely and predictably. They cannot do more than that. But fortunately this is all that is necessary. Obesity and flabby muscles are the reason for dumpy physiques. The grotesqueness of most amorphous citizens is acquired, not inherited. Fitness and weight control are indeed curative— no need to go in search of new genes. Loss of fat and increase of muscle tone can reconstruct any sagging shape into respectability, grace, rhythm, and self-confidence. Do not go on the defensive with the “everyone-in-my-family-is-heavy” line. Assume the positive and more medically accurate attitude: You can look and feel better, but it is up to you.
Few people enjoy exercising for the sake of exercise. Calisthenics are usually not that much fun. But exercises for specific needs can meet demands which otherwise might be neglected.
The exercises which follow have special purposes to be fitted into specific programs. These regimens are outlined
in specific detail to offer you reasons for their usefulness and to give you ideas in constructing sound and flexible programs of your own. You should modify, add, or subtract as your experience soon will dictate.
